Greg Flanders summed it up like this:

STRANGELANDS is a collaborative effort by an international team of photographers that aims to meld geographically distinct images into one sweeping and dreamlike landscape. The end effect is a sometimes surreal, always surprising juxtaposition of artist, place and vision. More than a reflection on the blurring of boundaries through international means of communication, strangelands is a celebration of today’s odd marriage between the local and the global, the hyper-specific and the triumphantly cosmopolitan.

strange.rs brings together 22 photographers from major cities around the planet. The group is united less by a common aesthetic than by a certain quixotic vision of the world, one that seeks out the subtle strangeness hidden behind everyday reality.

The exhibition was curated by James Turnley and will be showing at the Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff, Wales from today until October 3rd, so if you’re in the UK stop by and see us.

I’ll have 12 or so pictures hanging at this group show at Gallery 27 in Santa Barbara opening this Thursday during the local Artwalk. The show is designed to show off current and former students of Pierce College, and I was tasked with curating it to a large extent, along with printing, framing, mounting and hanging it. Thankfully, all the photographers involved that could help, did, and it’s been a really educational experience in regards to the planning (or lack thereof in this case) necessary to put a show like this together.

If you’re in the area Thursday or fancy driving up, we’d love to see you there. 5-8 p.m.

Photo had its own tiny little wall, but a really interesting mix of stuff: Mitch Dobrowner had a (smaller) landscape of the city, Ray Potes of Hamburger Eyes threw in with a cool photo that hung center-wall and I had a photo of some little girls and a dog near a dilapidated pool in Malibu. I’m happy to say the print sold, with most of the proceeds going to a charity dealing with suicide prevention.

Dandy Noel curated the show, and did an amazing job.

Just recovering from a grueling week-long trip to northern California.

I was in Sacarmento all weekend, participating in the Journalism Association of Community Colleges state conference.

Seminars and workshops for writers, photographers and designers ran for four consecutive days. There are also on-the-spot competitions in which representatives from 60+ schools compete.

I was chosen to compete in a Multimedia Competition and Opinion Writing competition. Somehow, I pulled out an Honorable Mention for the writing and my team won a Meritorious Award (6 pieces were awarded out of 28 entered) for the multimedia piece we produced on the oldest historical building in Old Sacramento, The Firehouse Restaurant.

Other awards were given for the best work published over the course of the previous year in the state of California. Here’s a recap of how I fared (9 awards total):

It’s tough out there, so La Pura Vida Gallery has decided to examine “the phenomenon of photographers forced to set up print sales just to pay the rent,” and maybe help a few of us out in the process.

I’m hearing 40+ photographers from around the world, should be quite the show.

Music, booze and some pretty good photographs, all month at L’KEG Gallery.

It was comprised mostly of the work I did on the California wildfires in October.

I just found out, via email, that I’m a finalist.

Award dinner in early April. Pretty exciting.

A very strange thing this mus-mus is.

100 photographers took a picture at the same time (@600 Internet time) on November 4th, 2008.

75 photographers selected by the organization (including Michael David Murphy, Hin Chua, Zoe Strauss, Roger Ballen and Amy Stein) and 25 photos chosen from a juried submission call.

It’s pretty cool being in their company, if only for an internet minute.

You have to love internet experimentation.

It really gets me thinking about how when you group pictures connected only by a minor thread, they take on a whole different meaning.

Anyway, my photo was chosen, you can find it towards the far right on the top row.

The results are up for all to see at the mus-mus.org gallery.
